T-Mobile launches Hotspot @Home service in USJuly 2, 2007 - T-Mobile has successfully launched its Hotspot @Home service in the US, which combines cellular and Wi-Fi technology for cheaper calls and better reception.
The service involves just one phone number, rather than the two separate numbers of other offerings, and does not require a separate Wi-Fi application either, offering seamless switching to Wi-Fi networks where available. All calls are free when connected via a home Wi-Fi network, a free Wi-Fi network outside the home or at any of T-Mobile’s 8,000 public hotspots. The first two handsets available for the service are the Nokia 6086 and Samsung T409, both costing US$ 50 with a two year plan or $170 without a plan, with extra handsets planned to be released in coming months. The @Home service costs $10 per month on top of a T-Mobile calling plan, or $20 per month extra for a family plan offering up to five lines. Prices are expected to rise to $20 for a single line or $30 for the family plans in mid-September. The service also requires a wireless router, costing $50 for a wireless D-Link model designed to extend the phone’s battery life, but free after a mail-in rebate. The company has been testing Hotspot @Home for the past 8 months in Seattle. For more information visit T-Mobile’s website http://www.theonlyphoneyouneed.com |
