Apple launches iTunes video download service in UKAugust 30, 2007 Apple has launched its iTunes video download service in the UK, offering 28 series of programmes such as Lost, Desperate Housewives and Ugly Betty from ABC, Disney, MTV and Paramount.
The service is charged at £1.89 per episode, which can be downloaded for keeps, compared to UK catch-up services such as those offered by ITV, Channel 4 and the BBC which self-delete after a short period of time. Viewing the content on a TV in the living room will require the Apple TV peripheral. Downloads will also be viewable on PCs and iPods, with the next generation of portable music players set to be unveiled this September. The service was launched in the US with mixed results, however in the future partnerships with the BBC and Channel 4 could be formed, thinks JupiterMedia analyst Mark Mulligan: It is a natural partnership and UK companies have shown a willingnessto experiment with online video distribution but a lot of questions remain over things such as usage rights and how to differentiate content. |
