Microsoft announces new on-demand media channel for Windows and Xbox 360

September 4, 2007 – Microsoft has announced details of a new on-demand entertainment channel called Coolroom for the Xbox 360 games console, Windows Vista and Windows XP Media Center.

According to Microsoft, Coolroom is “aimed at film fans who want to enjoy digital entertainment on TV from the comforts of their own sofa”.  The Coolroom channel will work in conjunction with the Coolroom online portal which will provide users with a unique PIN to sign-in via Media Center, similar to Sky’s premium content.  Downloaded content is available directly through the Media Center interface, while the Coolroom channel will be available via the Online Spotlight menu in Media Center.

“We are extremely proud to be expanding the Coolroom service as the first entertainment retail channel launched on Microsoft Media Center in the UK,” stated Rupert Fleming, Managing Director of Coolroom.

The website will also host the ‘3D Coolroom’, a virtual 3D loft apartment where users can upload and display their personal media and watch interview and movie clips.

“With the added benefit of cross-platform compatibility, Coolroom is flexible and easy-to-use,” commented Mike Haigh, UK Windows client product manager.  “It’s a great way for consumers to enjoy and experience personalised digital content.”
