EchoStar to buy Sling Media for $380mn

September 25, 2007 – EchoStar Communications has agreed to buy Sling Media, developers of the Slingbox device, for $380mn in cash and EchoStar options.

The Slingbox devices allow users to watch their home TV channels on any broadband-connected computer or laptop.  Sling Media CEO Blake Krikorian commented: “We have worked closely with EchoStar for more than two years and have come to realise that both companies have similar entrepreneurial cultures and mutual dedication and passion for creating empowering experiences that benefit the consumer and the media industry.”

EchoStar is meanwhile reported to be considering separating itself into two publicly traded companies – one to hold EchoStar’s technology and infrastructure assets, including its set-top box (STB) design and manufacturing business and international operations, and one to handle the DISH Network US consumer pay-TV business.
