UK broadcasters sign MOU to deliver high-definition content over Freeview

November 21, 2007 – The BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Five have announced that they have signed a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to deliver high-definition channels on the Freeview DTT platform in the UK, before the projected completion of the digital switchover in 2012.

BBC HD, which was approved earlier this week by the BBC Trust, ITV HD and Channel 4 HD could all be available on the Freeview platform by late 2009/2010, while Five HD is expected to launch as soon as capacity is available and by 2012 at the latest.

Under the agreement, the BBC will set aside one of its two multiplexes to carry HD services from the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Five.  The group said in a statement that it will need to consult with Ofcom, the UK’s independent regulator and competition watchdog for the communications industry, and also gain approval from the BBC Trust and the broadcasters’ boards.
