Belkin unveils Flywire wireless HDMI box

January 15, 2008 – Belkin presented its new Flywire wireless HDMI box at the CES 2008 show in Las Vegas, offering wireless video connectivity for HD TVs.

The unit supports the transmission of uncompressed 1080p HD video, and six sources can be connected to the transmitter.  The Belkin Flywire operates on the 5GHz wireless band, which could however place it at odds with the recently completed Wireless HD (WiHD) specification.

The Belkin Flywire connects directly to the AV equipment’s HDMI port, meaning that it may also be able to route HDMI control data and allow users to control devices such as a DVD player from another room, although this has not been confirmed by Belkin.  The unit can also connect to non-HDMI sources such as games consoles, TiVo PVRs or DVD players, as well as upscale their signal to 1080p.  In terms of connections, the unit offers two HDMI ports, two sets of component connections, composite and SCART.

The unit is expected to be launched in the middle of this year, with a suggested retail price of $499-599.
