Samsung and Macrovision partner to develop networked STB
January 17, 2008 – Samsung and Macrovision have announced that they are partnering to develop a digital set-top box (STB) capable of downloading, finding and managing digital content throughout the home.
Macrovision will provide the Macrovision Connected Platform, which includes application software for media players and media servers and middleware that is a component of the Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) standard and is compliant with the Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) standard. This will enable Samsung to develop a digital STB that can connect to other devices such as PCs and networked storage devices. The new STB is expected to be available in late 2008.
“The industry is focused on enhancing the consumer experience through advanced connected products,” said Eric Free, EVP and General Manager of the Embedded Solutions Business Unit at Macrovision. “Jointly with Samsung we expect to improve the overall experience and flexibility in enjoying digital content. Our embedded software takes the complication out of transferring and playing content on the network from one device to another.”
