Availability of HomePNA multimedia home networking products “drives maturity” of standard
January 30, 2008 – The HomePNA association has announced that a greater availability of HomePNA 3.1 products, and telco deployments of the standard, is demonstrating how it is maturing in the multimedia home marketplace.
HomePNA technology operates over existing coax cables and phone wires in the home to deliver Internet Protocol (IP) services such as IPTV such as IPTV, VoIP and data, often bundled by service providers. The HomePNA 3.1 standard creates a whole-home network with data rates of up to 320Mbps and guaranteed Quality of Service (QoS).
“New products and new service capabilities designed for IPTV keep the market vital and growing, which is good for telcos, OEMs and component makers, as well as for consumers,” said Steve Hawley, senior IPTV analyst for Multimedia Research Group (MRG). “What’s more, guaranteed QoS helps operators ensure a competitive level of service quality.”
The HomePNA association has stated that there are now over 17 HomePNA products on the market, with nine large telcos (and a number of smaller telcos) having deployed HomePNA to deliver triple-play services to subscribers.
The organisation is holding its annual HomePNA Plugfest event in California on February 25-29, which is expected to increase the number of interoperable HomePNA products.
