TiVo calls time on Series3 DVR
February 4, 2008 – TiVo has curtailed production of its Series3 digital video recorder (DVR) unit, following a surge in holiday sales that emptied stocks early.
In addition to the run on warehouse stock following a $200 rebate over last Christmas, there was also a parts shortage for the Series3 which further contributed to the decision. Updates of the Series3’s features will continue to be offered, in addition to service support.
In an email to the TiVo Lovers blog, the company stated: “We are nearing the end of production on this particular model of the Series3 hardware. However, we are not ‘End of Lifing’ the product (EOL). Development continues on new features and capabilities for all Seriesd3 platforms, including this specific model… Availability of the 250Gb model will vary from retailer to retailer throughout the year, and as a result we are currently recommending the TiVo HD model as an alternative solution for their customers.”
