ZyXEL to join Open IPTV Forum in mid-June, according to reports
June 6, 2008 - Taiwanese set-top box firm ZyXEL Communications is expected to join the Open IPTV Forum by the middle of this month, according to reports, making the company the organisation's first Taiwanese member.
The speculation arose after Yun-Chao Hu, Chairman of the Open IPTV Forum, said in Taipei recently that six new companies, including one from Taiwan, are to become members of the organisation in the middle of this month, bringing the total to 35. According to a report in Taiwanese portal Digitimes, market sources infer that ZyXEL is most likely to be the Taiwanese firm mentioned. Hu added that as set-top boxes account for over 60% of the capital investment made by IPTV operators, developers must adhere to open standards so as to drive down costs and bring IPTV into the mass market.
The Open IPTV Forum is expected to finalise the release of its end-to-end specifications for IPTV in August or September of this year, with compliant devices anticipated to enter the market in 2009.
