BBC1 to be simulcast on web
June 6, 2008 - The BBC has revealed that its flagship channel BBC1 is to be simulcast on the Internet via bbc.co.uk, making it the first of the broadcasting corporation's analogue TV channels to do so, and giving a portent of more convergence to come.
Viewers will however still need to pay the licence fee despite not viewing via a regular TV set: "You need a TV licence to use any television receiving equipment such as a TV set, set-top box, video or DVD recorder, computer or mobile phone to watch or record TV programmes as they are being show on TV," said the BBC. The plan was outlined in the corporation's annual statement of programme policy, and is expected to be started within the next 12 months.
BBC Director General Mark Thompson said: "Building on the success of the iPlayer, we want to develop bbc.co.uk to include a broad range of the BBC's broadcast content, as well as new and interactive forms of media that enable audiences to interact with and contribute to the website."
